Riccardo DEL FRA studies at the Music Conservatory of Frosinone. He plays at an early stage with some of the best Italian jazz musicians, like Gianni BASSO, Enrico PIERANUNZI, Franco D'ANDREA...For a while member of the RAI Jazz Orchestra, he also plays with many American musicians such as Kai WINDING, Art FARMER.
At the end of 79 he meets Chet BAKER, records with him the album "Soft Journey" and starts touring with him throughout Europe and Japan. He recorded 12 albums with Chet BAKER.
In 81, he plays in Rome with Art BLAKEY and his Jazz Messengers.
Riccardo DEL FRA then moves to Paris where he performs a.o. with : Sonny STITT, Art FARMER, Johnny GRIFFIN, Lee KONITZ, Horace PARLAN, Dizzy GILLESPIE, James MOODY, Clifford JORDAN, Alain JEAN MARIE, Barney WILEN, Al LEVITT, Kirk LIGHTSEY, Billy HART, Ted CURSON, Teddy EDWARDS, Clifford JORDAN, Alain JEAN-MARIE, Tommy FLANAGAN, Benny GOLSON, Martial SOLAL, Bob BROOKMEYER etc.
In '82 he made a tour in Italy with Kenny WHEELER, Paul MOTIAN, Evan PARKER and John TAYLOR.
Riccardo DEL FRA, who still freelances in Paris, played and recorded a.o. with Johnny GRIFFIN, Barney WILEN, Lee KONITZ.
He plays regularly with saxophonist Johnny GRIFFIN, and was frequently associated with Toots THIELEMANS. He toured with him in the US (90) and in Japan (91, 92), with pianist Michel HERR and drummer Adam NUSSBAUM.
As a leader he recorded in 89 the LP/CD "A sip of your touch" (IDA 021), consisting of duos with Dave LIEBMAN, Art FARMER, Michel GRAILLIER, Rachel GOULD and Enrico PIERANUNZI. This album received several awards (Grand Prix Fnac '89).
In '93, he participated in the film soundtrack of "Just Friends", music by Michel HERR, featuring Archie SHEPP (CD AMC 50.047).

In '92, he wrote "Silent Call", a piece for string orchestra and jazz quartet that he created at the Paris Jazz Festival, with saxophonist Francois JEANNEAU as a soloist and conductor Georges Elie OCTORS.
In July '93, in Paris, at the Jazz Festival of La Villette, he created his composition "Visions d'Ailes", for string quartet and double bass.
In '95, he wrote and created "Inner Galaxy", a suite for strings.
His writing talents have received a wide recognition, also in the world of contemporary music.
He wrote film scores for Lucas Belvaux.
He writes for his own ensembles.
Riccardo DEL FRA is a member of several groups led by Belgian pianist/composer Michel HERR and appears on his quintet CD Notes of Life (Igloo Igl 142).
Riccardo teaches at the Paris Music Conservatory.
In November 2006, he receives the French "Django d'Or" in the category "confirmed musician".
