Jelle Van Giel (30/06/1986) was interessed in playing drums since he was 2 years old. At the age of 6 he started to take private lessons. After that he went to the music school of Turnhout (BE) where he started his studies classical percussion with Dirk Dergent. Here he also did some jazzclasses with Swa Mercelis and Lieven Cambre. After graduating in Turnhout he went to the Conservatory of Antwerp (BE) where he studied jazzdrums with Jan De Haas and Teun Verbruggen. In his second year of Master he had the opportunity to be taught by some great Jazzmasters: Jim Black, Ari Hoenig, Han Bennink, Dre Pallemaerts, Lieven Venken, Eric Thielemans & Pierre Tanguay.
After this Jelle went to study at the Conservatory of The Hague (NL) with Eric Ineke, Stefan Krüger, Joost Patocka and Martijn Vink doing master after master.

He plays in several groups such as:

  • Jelle Van Giel Group (his own project with his own music); Jelle Van Giel - drums/compositions, Erik Bogaerts - altsax, Nathan Daems - tenorsax, Carlo Nardozza - trumpet, Lucien Fraipont - guitar, Bram Weijters - piano, Janos Bruneel - double bass
  • International Dutch Quartet (group with people from Venezuela, Belgium, Korea & France) where he tours a lot with in France, the Netherlands and Belgium;
  • Transpiradansa (TD) With this group he traveled to China in 2010 to play some concerts;
  • Dependent Ensemble (with people from Lithuania and Canada), were he toured a lot with in Lithuania and Latvia;
  • The Jacquelines. Belgium band in the style of the Andrew Sisters but with own, up-to-date repertoire;
  • Eef Van Acker Quintet. Belgium band with Bram De Looze/piano, Marco Cirone/gitaar and Janos Bruneel/contrabas;
  • Krema Kawa : world music
  • Shakara Utd. : afrobeat
  • Lady and the Nerd :cabaret
    ... and does a lot of freelance in his own country and abroad playing Jazz, Pop, Rock, World music, Folk...

    He took masterclasses with Jeff Ballard, Gene Lake, Peter Erskine, Dave Liebman, Bojan Z, Monthy Alexander, Andre Ceccarelli…

    He had the opportunity to play with some great musicians such as Toots Thielemans, Ack van Rooyen, T.S. Galloway, Harvie Swartz , Olaf Tarenskeen, Kurt Van Herck, Nico Schepers, Frank Vaganée, Marc Godfroid, Serge Plume, Jef Neve...

    Jelle is currently teaching and giving band coaching. Also from 2011 he is endorsed by Drumcraft. A young, brand new brand from Germany.
