"The Time of Our Singing", the new opera by Kris Defoort, will be created at La Monnaie (Brussels) in September 2021
The premiere of Kris Defoort's new opera, "The Time of Our Singing", will take place on September 14, 2021 at La Monnaie (Brussels). Black Lives Matter, police violence, elections... are themes that have not left the front of the news during the past year. Recent American history finds a singular echo in The Time of Our Singing, inspired by the novel of the same name by Richard Powers. The work tells the story of a mixed family whose music both unites and divides them, against the backdrop of segregation in post-war America. In collaboration with librettist Peter van Kraaij, conductor Kwamé Ryan, and director Ted Huffman, Kris Defoort opens up an imaginary space where history meets history, where people come together and weave a narrative, where jazz and classical music enrich each other.
With the Orchestre de chambre de la Monnaie and several jazzmen (Mark Turner, Lander Gyselinck, Nicolas Thys, Hendrik Lasure).
