belgianjazz.be : a new website with portraits of musicians and bands
To commemorate 100 years of jazz, Flanders Arts Institute is rounding off a year of celebrations by launching belgianjazz.be, an online who’s who of contemporary Belgian jazz with 30 portraits of bands and musicians. Moreover, the website offers an overview of jazz venues in Flanders and Brussels, a critical look at what typifies our jazz scene, a guide to how to listen to jazz and a playlist of contemporary tracks.
Belgianjazz.be features a series of specially commissioned portraits of contemporary jazz acts and musicians - selected and written by jazz programmers and critics - a mapping of venues and organizations, an outsiders’ view on the Belgian jazz scene, inspiration on how to listen to jazz and a playlist of contemporary tracks.
Belgianjazz.be is an initiative by Flanders Arts Institute realized in close collaboration with JazzLab Series, KAAP, Bozar, Ancienne Belgique, Flagey, Handelsbeurs and Nona, with the support of the Flemish Government and SABAM For Culture. In 2018 Belgianjazz.be will be updated with other portraits, including artists from the French-speaking region with the help of Wallonie-Bruxelles Musique (WBM).
Belgianjazz.be gives international professionals an outlook on the current state of affairs in Belgian contemporary jazz. It does not aspire to provide an exhaustive overview of all the acts and artists working in jazz in Belgium today. The selection of portraits is the result of a thoughtful exercise done by a committee of experts : jazz promoters and critics.

A rare live recording of violinist Zbigniew Seifert "Live in Solothurn", cd with pianist Michel Herr
The Zbigniew Seifert Foundation in Poland has found and recently released on cd a rare and historical live recording (made in Switserland) of the late jazz violinist Zbigniew Seifert, a musical giant who left us much too early. Shortly before his dead, Zbigniew went on the road with his European quartet "Variospheres", consisting of Michel Herr (piano, Fender Rhodes), Hans Hartmann (double bass, CH) and Janusz Stefanski (drs, PL). The cd is titled "Live in Solothurn".
Although soundwise not technically perfect, the album is a rare testimony of the playing of the great Polish violinist, who was inspired by the music of John Coltrane, modal, folk and free music but always with a very personal approach. Zbigniew Seifert's music remains undoubtly of an amazing intensity and modernity.
