Mâäk Kojo : videos from their African tour
The band Mâäk did an adventurous KOJO-tour in Africa in December 2011. In three weeks they visited Cotonou (Benin), Abomey (Benin), Natitangou (Benin), Fada 'N Gourma (Burkina Faso), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso), Ségou (Mali), Bamako (Mali), Dakar (Senegal) and Louga (Senegal).
Film director Sam Asaert made several videos. 3 recent additions : a video clip shot in Bamako, a concert in Bobo Dioulasso and a new trailer for the European tour in May 2012 !

Nicolas Kummert's "Voices" to play in Paris
The band "Voices", around saxophonist Nicolas Kummert, will give 2 concerts in Paris to mark the release of their new album :
  • Live recording of the radio show "un mardi idéal" (France Musique) on January 31, 2012 (19:30), to be broadcasted at 22:30.
  • "Sunset", February 2, 2012, 21:30 (rue des Lombards).

    Auditions for a new big band : Ghent Youth Jazz Orchestra
    Following in the footsteps of the Brussels Youth Jazz Orchestra (now in its 2nd edition), a new big band for young musicians (under 27) will see the day of light, the Ghent Youth Jazz Orchestra, led by Filip Verneert. Auditions will take place on January 29, 2012.

    JazzPlaysEurope, 20 musicians, 7 countries, concert at WinterJazz on Jan. 28
    JazzPlaysEurope features this year 20 of the best European musicians, coming from 7 countries, brought together in one unique concert evening !
    It takes place on January 28, 2012 during the Winterjazz festival, in partnership with JazzLab Series.
    Belgium is represented by pianist Christian Mendoza, Andrew Claes (sax) and Lander Gyselinck (drs).

    Golden Globe for "The Artist", best music soundtrack, featuring the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Jef Neve
    The Golden Globes in Hollywood crowned the movie "The Artist" (Michel Hazanavicius) in several categories, including best music soundtrack. The music, composed by Ludovic Bource, was recorded in Brussels (Studio 4, Flagey) by the Brussels Jazz Orchestra (playing a.o. with great conviction in the Benny Goodman's big band style !), the Brussels Philharmonic (conducted by Ernst van Tiel, NL) and pianist Jef Neve.

    The Nathalie Loriers New Trio will release its CD "Les Trois Petits Singes" (De Werf) in February, with Philippe Aerts on bass and Rick Hollander on drums.

    Pianist Igor Gehenot, the winner of the Sabam Jeunesses Musicales Jazz awards 2011, has recorded his first album in trio for Igloo records with Sam Gerstmans (db.) & Teun Verbruggen( dr.)

    His unpredictable duo with keyboardist Frank Wuyts will remain in our memories.

    Bassist Freddie Deronde has passed away on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012.
    He played with numerous American soloists (Joe Henderson, Chet Baker, Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Don Byas, Hank Mobley, etc...), and played and recorded with saxophonist JR Monterose (cd "Spontaneous effort" as a leader), guitarist Philip Catherine, pianist Michel Herr, etc...

    In the Music Village (Brussels), trombonist Phil Abraham will share the stage with his US colleague Jiggs Whigham on Jan. 8, 2012 (with Jeanfrançois Prins, Bart De Nolf and Bruno Castellucci. On the 19, he will introduce 2 new bands, a trio (Fabien Degryse, Sal La Rocca) and a quartet (Ron Van Rossum, Sal La Rocca, Thomas Grimmonprez).
