New initiative in Ghent : Jazz & Sounds Festival 2010
In Ghent (B), a joint venture by Muziekcentrum De Bijloke, Kunstencentrum Vooruit, Gent Jazz Festival, vzw Muzikon van Hogeschool Gent Conservatorium and Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (KASK).
Emphasis on contemporary music with opening for other art forms such as video installations.
First edition to take place March 22 to 28 2010 at cultural center Vooruit, Bijloke music center and the Hogeschool Gent school conservatory.

New : Drums High School of Brussels, with Bruno Castellucci a.o.
As of Jan. 1, 2010, a new school for drummers and percussionists will be launched by Toto Poznantek (drs), Gauthier Lisein (perc.) and Bruno Castellucci (drs). Needless to say that Bruno is in charge of jazz drumming.

Garrett List organises auditions to form a new ensemble, "ViVo"
Trombone player and composer/arranger Garrett List wants to put together a new band, named "Vivo". Auditions are to take place in Maastricht (NL) on Jan. 31 2010, Liège (B) on Feb. 3 and Aachen (D).

New previously unreleased cd of J J Johnson featuring Bobby Jaspar (1957) : What's new
The Muziekcentrum Nederland (NL) released some live recordings, a.o. of the Jay Jay Johnson Quintet made at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in 1957. With Bobby Jaspar (ten sax & flute), Tommy Flanagan (p), Wilbur Little (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums). The album is titled "What’s New" - The J.J.Johnson Quintet live in Amsterdam 1957.

Final bar : drummer Johnny Peret
Drummer and vibraphone player Johnny Peret passed away on Dec. 25, 2009. Born in 1920, he played with Al Goyens, Jacques Pelzer, Sadi, Jack Sels, Léo Souris, Herman Sandy, with whom he recorded a couple of tracks for the now legendary jazz LP "Jazz in little Belgium" (1968).
He also played with Jack Say, Babs Robert, etc,... and was an reknown drum teacher for the following generations (Robert Pernet, Bruno Castellucci a.o.).

Outnote, a new international jazz label, will be launched in 2010
In 2010, Outhere, producer of the classical record labels Æon, Alpha, Fuga Libera et Ricercar, will launch a new label based in Belgium and devoted to contemporary international jazz : OUTNOTE.
One of the first releases on Outnote will be ‘Memories of Paris’, of the composer and pianist Eric Watson, known for his fusion work between jazz and classical music.
The artistic manager will be Jean-Jacques Pussiau, the French producer behind Owl and Nightbird Music.

Peter Vermeersch wrote the soundtrack of "My queen Karo", movie to be shown at Palm Springs festival
My Queen Karo, a Belgian movie directed by Dorothée Van den Berghe, and for which Peter Vermeersch wrote the soundtrack, has been selected to participate in the film festival of Palm Springs (USA).

Trombone player Phil Abraham participated in a tribute to Miles in Paris with Laurent Cugny's Enormous band
On December 18, 2010, trombone player Phil Abraham took part in a concert at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, in the context of a week devoted to the music of Miles Davis. With Laurent Cugny's "Enormous Band", he played music from Miles's electric period in the 70ies, next to musicians such as Dominique di Piazza, Pierre Drevet, Stéphane Guillaume, Stéphane Huchard, Flavio Boltro, Stéphane Belmondo, Denis Leloup, David Linx, Claude Egea, Philippe Sellam, etc...

Clarinet player Joachim Badenhorst on Australian tour with Trio Vehere, cd "Unravelling"
Clarinet player Joachim Badehorst is currently touring in Australia with Trio Vehere, with Norvegian singer Kari Bleivik and Australian pianist Sean Foran.
It is a promoting tour for their new album `Unravelling`, recorded Leeds (U.K), released by the Australian label "Newmarket music".
They play at the International womans jazz festival in Melbourne, clubs in Brisbane, Maleny, Sydney, Surfers paradise, Adelaide.

A book on Jazz Bilzen, Belgian jazz festival 1965-1981
"Jazz Bilzen - Tijd voor muziek (en veel meer...) 1965-1981" is the title of a book written (in Dutch) by Koenraad Nijssen (a.o.) to cover the history of Jazz Bilzen, one of the most important jazz festival in Belgium as of 1965.
Among the musicians who played there are Belgian musicians such as Jack Sels, Sadi, Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Michel Herr, BRT Big band, Jack Van Poll (NL), and famous US jazzmen such as Dexter Gordon, Ornette Coleman, Dizzy Gillespie, Jaki Byard, John MacLaughlin, Charlie Mingus, Joe Henderson, etc...

Flat Earth Society with John Watts, at Jazzahead (Bremen), on BBC 3
Peter Vermeersch's big band, Flat Earth Society, is on the spotlight :
  • In March 2010 : une collaboation with John Watts (singer and guitarist of the rock band Fisher Z)
  • On April 23, 2010, they participate in "Jazzahead" (Bremen, Germany) and in the opening night of the "European late Night"
  • On Dec; 28, 2009, they can be heard on BBC 3 radio.

    Werf records looks ahead, with a.o. several new releases
    In a letter sent to musicians who are involved in the label, W.E.R.F. records expresses his will to continue producing albums, despite the global crisis of the record industry. They also intend to publish and widely distribute a new catalogue, to increase their visibility in the media, to develop their web store and their offerings in digitized music, etc...
    In the coming months, they will produce a bunch of albums, with artists (tbc) such as : Jeroen Van Herzeele, Yves Peeters, Brussels Jazz Orchestra + Bert Joris, Ben Sluijs/Erik Vermeulen, Bart De Nolf, DelVita Group, Bart Quartier/Bart Van Caenegem, a Django project with the Decauter family, Hamster Axis, Chris Joris and some reissues (the first one will be "Stones", with Ben Sluijs and Erik Vermeulen, originally released in 2001 on the Jazz'Halo label).

    On "Le Chant du Monde", a 25-cd box of Django Reinhardt for his 100th birthday ; Djangofollies in January 2010
    On the occasion of the 100th birthday of guitarist Django Reinhardt in 2010 (he was born in Liberchies, Belgium, on Jan. 23, 1910), the label "Le Chant du Monde" releases a cdbox with his studio recordings.
    The album is titled "Manoir de mes rêves" (Le Chant du Monde 5741826.50 25cds !) and features 623 tracks !
    Check also the upcoming "Djangofollies" festival, (Jan 16-31 2010), in various locations in Belgium.
