Jan 16 & 17 : "Le Jazz perd le Nord", 2 days of Belgian jazz from Wallonia & Brussels in Avignon (F)
On January 16, 17, 2009, the Theatre des Doms and the French AJMI present 2 days of jazz from Wallonia and Brussels in Avignon (F), with the participation of Mâäk's Spirit, Fabien Degryse Trio, Animus Anima (on the 16), Mélanie De Biasio Quintet, Slang (17).

German singer Barbara Bürkle wins "Voices Now" 2008, Brussels International Young Jazz Singers Competition
After the concert of the finalists at the AB (Brussels), German singer Barbara Bürkle has won the first Prize (2.500 euros) at "Voices Now" 2008, the Brussels International Young Jazz Singers Competition
Charles Turner (USA) received the 2nd Prize (1.500euros) and the "Prix du Public"and of the City of Brussels. The Portuguese Maria Joao Mendès obtained the 3rd Prize (750 euros).
A final concert featured the 3 finalists, but also brief appearances of jury members David Linx, Denise Jannah as well as the winner of the 2007 edition, the South-Corean Jihye Lee.

    Phil Abraham (trombone) recorded with Stéphane Guillaume 's Brass Project (F)
    Phil just participated in the recording of a CD of Stéphane Guillaume (French saxophonist & multi-instrumentalist) as part of a 11tet named "Brass Project".
    Release expected in spring. The groupe performed in a concert in Paris on December 6th at la Maison de Radio France.

    "Toots Thielemans, l’incroyable destin d’un ketje de Bruxelles" a film by Thierry Loreau & Pierre Barré on RTBF TV during the coming holidays
    The movie relating Toots Thielemans life story will be aired on RTBF TV, first channel, on January 1st at 22:15, January 6 ae 9:20 and January 10 at 23:55, under the title "Toots Thielemans, l’incroyable destin d’un ketje de Bruxelles".
    Duration : 63 minutes ; it is based on often unknown archives.
    Toots is telling his track record of a boy from the Marolles, the popular neighborhood of dowtown Brussels, his success in the USA and his being an international celebrity of the music world.

    "Voices now", the Brussels International Young Jazz Singers Competition, announces its 3 finalists.
    At the end of a week concerts at the Music Village, the 12 semi-finalists were filtered by the jury (David Linx, Dani Klein, Denise Jannah, JiHye Lee and Isabelle Decallonne).
    Barbara Bürkle (GERMANY), Charles Turner (USA) et Maria Joao Mendes (PORTUGAL) Will present themselves this Saturday night, at the AB à 20.00h to claim the 3 first places (2.500, 1.00 et 750euros) et land the Public price.

    American jazz guitarist Jimmy Gourley is dead
    American ex-pat guitarist Jimmy Gourley (1926-2008) died in France over the past weekend aged 83.
    Gourley came to France 50 years ago and remained in Paris ever since.

    RTBF (musiq3) concert Vincent Bruyninckx, on December 11.
    As a promotion to outstanding pianist Vincent Bruyninckx the French speaking radio is organizing a concert in their studio, using their superb Steinway.
    Vincent is known as companion to Fred Delplancq, Daniel Romeo, Phil Abraham, Laurent Doumont, Benoit Vanderstraeten.
    The concert will start at 18h30 and will be transmitted via FM radio as usual.
    There will be no visual part as previously announced

    Dec. 12 : unique concert of Ivan Paduart + Metropole Orchestra, arr. Michel Herr, Bert Joris, Paduart, Jim Mc Neely
    In December 2008, pianist and composer Ivan Paduart is invited by the prestigious Metropole Orchestra (more than 50 musicians, including a big band & a classical ensemble with strings etc...) for a production featuring his compositions, with guests Bob Malach (tenor sax, USA) and Fay Claassen (vocals, NL).
    The arrangements will be provided by Michel Herr, Bert Joris, Ivan himself and Jim Mc Neely, who will also conduct the orchestra.
    A recording is planned, with the aim to release a cd, and 1 exceptional concert will take place on December 12, 2008 at the Cirque Royal in Brussels.

    Final bar : singer Anca Parghel
    Romanian singer Anca Parghel (51) has died from cancer in Timisoara on Dec. 5, 2008.
    She was active on the European and Belgian scene (a.o. with bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse and guitarist Paolo Radoni) and taught at the Brussels Conservatory for a while.

    The 12.500 euro award was attributed to Henri Vandenberghe, festival director by minister Bert Anciaux. Given for its contribution to creativity and qualitative music, during 32 years, brought to a large public in Brussels and Flanders.

    Belgian six-string bass player Roman Korolik has put up a brand new band with Roeland Alen on guitar, Jan Servaes on drums and Dirk Schreurs on piano. They made their debut at the 2008 Motives for Jazzfestival in Genk. The Roman Korolik Group plays original compositions to be heard live on

    Voices Now : the 4th Brussels International Young Jazz Singers Competition 2008
    12 young singers from all over the world in competition in The Music Village from 9 to 13 December 2008. The fourth edition of this competition, an initiative of Brussels jazz club The Music Village in partnership with AB and with the support of the Brussels Region Government and the City of Brussels.
    79 candidates from 24 countries have entered a valid subscription and have presented themselves to the jury.
    The jury, presided by DAVID LINX, has selected 12 semi-finalists who will perform in concert before an audience from 9 to 13 December.
    The jury is exclusively composed of professionals: David Linx, Belgium’s best international representative of modern jazz singing, Dutch jazz-singer DENISE JANNAH, Belgian singer DANI KLEIN (Vaya con Dios), AB programmator ISABELLE DECALLONNE and jazz singer JIHYE LEE, winner of the 2007 competition.
    Far from being a marathon event, this jazz competition is based on some essential values proper to the jazz world: open mind, mutual respect and convivial fraternity.
    Nine countries, among which also Belgium with Natacha Wuyts, are represented in the semi-finals.

    The 4 semi-final days at The Music Village start Tuesday 9 December. Each candidate will be accompanied by the same trio: pianist SabinTodorov, bassist Sal la Rocca and drummer Lionel Beuvens.
    After the last semi-final on Friday 12 December the jury will select the 3 laureates who will compete for the 3 prizes (in total 4,500 euros) at the Saturday 13 Grand final concert in the AB. Each of them will have 20 minutes to show his of her talent, including their personal version of the famous Joni Mitchell’s “RIVER”.

    Michel Mainil quartet celebrating its 12th anniversary in concert and coming CD release.
    The Michel Mainil Quartet, with Michel Mainil (saxes), Alain Rochette (piano), José Bedeur (double bass) & Antoine Cirri (drums) marks this season 12 years of existance.
    Various gigs are scheduled (details in our concert calendar pages) and a live recording of their third album, scheduled for the 4th to 8th of August at the Brussels Music Village.
