Tears : Jean-Pierre Gebler (baritone sax). Funeral on Jan. 4, 2007
News just got out, baritone saxophone player Jean-Pierre Gebler (68) has died this morning from a heart failure.
His career on the baritone sax started in the footsteps of Gerry Mulligan and Lars Gullin. In 1958, he appears on the LP "Jazz in Little Belgium". He played with Dexter Gordon, Chet Baker, Chuck Israels, Barney Wilen, Jon Eardley, Jacques Pelzer, Jacques Pirotton, Milou Struvay, Michel Herr, Steve Houben, Fabrice Alleman, Phil Abraham, Richard Rousselet, Gino Lattuca, etc... He was for a while active on the jazz scene in Portugal, and also recorded the soundtrack of the first movie of the Portuguese new wave, "O Balarmino" by Fernando Lopes.
After a musical eclipse (in 1967), he resumed his musical activities in 1982 and recorded several albums as a leader, in which he always was able to combine an intelligent selection of standards, some lesser known jazz pieces and some original compositions.
He was a friend of the musicians, a cultivated man and always communicated his enthusiasm and admiration for jazz music and jazz musicians around him.
