Mâäk Quintet in Morocco, meeting with Maroccan musicians
On the occasion of the 25th edition of Jazz au Chellah, the trumpeter Laurent Blondiau and Mâäk Quintet invite the musicians Laïla Amezian to perform in Rabat (Marocco). Laïla and the quintet will perform songs that bear witness to their shared journeys of discovery through the rich musical history of the Middle East and the West. On Thursday September 29, 2022, they will perform in different venues in the city (district of the embassies, popular district, penitentiary center). Then on Friday the 30th, they will give a concert with Moroccan percussionist Mustapha Antari.

"It's a song blending blues influences, african grooves and improvisation. A primitiv dirty sounds emerging from a prepared guitar. The melody is repeated many times like a working movement, in between, improvisation is taking place."

Gabriele di Franco wins first place in the international composition & arrangement contest "Scrivere in Jazz" (Sardinia)
Guitarist Gabriele di Franco's composition 'Betsabea' won first place at the international composition and arrangement competition "Scrivere in Jazz" in Sardinia (I).
He was the only representative for Belgium among the competition finalists.
"Betsabea" won in Category A, the category dedicated to compositions inspired by traditional Sardinian music.
The jury: Marco Tiso, Corrado Guarino, Michele Corcella, Gianluigi Trovesi.

Bassist/composer Lara Rosseel artist in residence at the Ha Concerts (previously Handelsbeurs) in Ghent
Starting this season, Ha Concerts (formerly Handelsbeurs in Ghent) hosts an artist in residence for a year. Lara Rosseel, the bassist who was recently appointed as Ghent's city composer, is kicking things off.
"I'm going to play with an international trio anyway/ Three women from different traditions, who not only make music but also sing." Rosseel says.

The Hnita Jazz Club reopens on September 24, 2022. Live on Radio Klara
The Hnita-Hoeve, which hosts the activities of the Hnita Jazz Club, will reopen its doors on September 24, 2022 as a modern and accessible (jazz) club, rooted in the past but open to the future. Live on Radio Klara.
With over 1000 concerts to date, the Hnita Jazz Club is one of the oldest jazz clubs in the Benelux. Great European and American artists such as Chet Baker, Charles Mingus, Gregory Porter, Keith Jarrett, Toots Thielemans, Art Blakey and Bill Evans have passed through Heist-op-den-Berg over the past 65 years. Initiator Juul Anthonissen ran the jazz club until his death in 2008, now taken over by Peter Anthonissen.
The widely supported renovation and restart of the received the Ultima for Cultural Entrepreneurship.
A series of concerts will take place from Sept. 24 through October 2, 2022. Jazz, indieconcerten, blues, etc...

New video by vocalist Barbara Wiernik : "Like a morning song"
To accompany the release of her new album "Ellipse", singer Barbara Wiernik has a new video on YouTube, directed by Vincent Blairon (click on the title to watch the video). It is a composition by Alain Pierre, with lyrics by Barbara, recorded with Hélène Ducret (clarinets), Sigrid Vandenbogaerde (cello) and Bart Quartier (marimba, vibraphone).
The clip also highlights the work of dancer Geraudy Bombile.

Jean-Pol Schroeder's jazz lectures (in French) soon available on line : 85 episodes, 170 hours
During the Covid lockdown, the Maison du Jazz de Liège proposed on line the course of history and understanding of jazz given by Jean-Pol Schroeder.
He recorded 85 episodes of two hours starting from the origins of jazz in Africa in the 17th century until today.
This is not a musicology course and no prerequisites are required.
These 170 hours of courses/lectures will be re-launched on Vimeo in mid-September, with one episode every Thursday for two years.
Registration is done at the Maison duf Jazz (lamaisondujazz@gmail.com) and the lectures can be viewed at any time. To access the program, all you have to do is become a "passionate member" of the House of Jazz, a subscription fee of 50 euros per year.

Final bar : singer Bébé Suong
The singer Bébé Suong (born in Vietnam, but who made a career in Belgium), passed away on August 23, 2022. The funeral will take place at the Crematorium of Court-St-Etienne on Monday August 29, 2022 at 2pm. Condolences to the family and to her husband, the drummer Jean-Luc Van Lommel.
Shortly before her death, Bébe Suong had put the finishing touches on an unpublished personal version of Édith Piaf's "L'Hymne à l'amour," recorded during the pandemic with guitarist Peter Hertmans, pianist Tars Lootens, bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse and drummer Jean-Luc Van Lommel.

    The trio of saxophonist Matthias Van den Brande has won the B-Jazz International Contest 2022
    The winner of the Albert Michiels 2022 Award is the Matthias Van den Brande Trio. Belgian saxophonist and composer Matthias Van den Brande played with Dutch bassist Tijs Klaassen and - also from the Netherlands - drummer Wouter Kühne.

    Brussels Jazz Orchestra unveils its 2022-2023 season
    After their tribute to Toots Thielemans (at Jazz Middelheim), the Brussels Jazz Orchestra will be touring in September/October 2022 with the projects We Have a Dream (Menin), Night 352 (Concertgebouw in Bruges) and Two Places (Geel). At the end of the year, they will unveil a project with Aka Moon and another with the French singer Camille Bertault in a tribute to Serge Gainsbourg.
