Barre PHILLIPS was born in San Francisco in 1934.

He began playing the double bass at age 13.

In 1962 he moved to New York City, where he met and studied with Frederick Zimmermann.

His stay in NY, during the '60ties, brought him into contact with Free Jazz and contemporary music.

In 1964 he appeared, as a soloist, with the NY Philharmonic and thereafter made his 1st trip to Europe, as member of the George Russell sextet.

Following a tour with the Jimmy Giuffre trio, in 1967, while being in London, he was offered a role in a French film (Le Temps Fou), a European tour with the Marion Brown trio and a solo theatre music commission in Aix-en-Provence. He never went back to the US and lives, since '72, in the south of France.

Being also a composer, Barre worked in films, ballet, theatre, composing feature music for films, scores for ballet and regularly receive commissions for new pieces for concert performances, music festivals and radio productions.

Barre has recorded over 100 albums, 30 under his name, and is extensively touring Europe, North America and Japan. He is performing as soloist and improviser. His stage experience spans a wide range of musical styles, from Coleman Hawkins to Cecil Taylor, to interactive electronic music.

His work in the '70's with John Surman and Stu Martin, "The Trio", became a model in itself, and influenced many younger musicians

Among the many artists he played with are also Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, Chick Corea, Lee Konitz, Charlie Mariano, Michel Portal, Albert Mangelsdorff, Martial Solal, Paul Bley, Ornette Coleman, Bobby McFerrin.... and many others. To mention also his being a member, during the NY years, of the Maynard Ferguson Big band.

Barre is also teaching and regularly leads workshops throughout the world.

He was occasionnally associated with Belgian musicians, such as pianists Erik VERMEULEN and Véronique BIZET, saxophonist Michel MAINIL, drummer Eric THIELEMANS etc...
