The young Fulco Ottervanger is bursting with energy. He is simultaneously a thinker and a hyperkinetic pianist. He is presenting four projects at Jazz Middelheim. De Beren Gieren separately, and with guest trumpeter Susan Silva Santos, Beraadgeslagen with drummer Lander Gyselink and Stadt, a quartet blending indie rock with a heady whiff of kraut psychedelica.
The Dutchman calling Ghent his home is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and improviser. He grew up in a house full of music and started playing the cello aged 7, soon followed by the piano, guitar, bass guitar and drums. He has been writing his own compositions and texts from a young age, and it should thus come as no surprise that he also turns up in theatre projects. His first piano teacher was Jozef Dumoulin. He studied jazz piano at the Ghent Conservatory with Erik Vermeulen, and classical composition with Frank Nuyts.
Beraadgeslagen is a duo project set up by Fulco with another young lion of the contemporary jazz scene, drummer Lander Gyselinck (STUFF., LABtrio). Fulco also ventures to get his hands on the guitar, running amok on all kinds of key instruments, until he just about ends up in space and Lander brings him back down to Earth with a few well-judged and resounding strikes.
