This new quintet led by Tom Van Dyck dives into the musical heritage of Lennie Tristano (°1919-1978) and his followers known as the “Tristano School”.
Tristano is an American jazz piano player, a composer, an arranger, and in the late 40s and 50s one of the first teachers in jazz improvisation. In teaching improvisation he encouraged his students to pursue the development of personal content. His best known students are saxophone players Lee Konitz en Warne Marsh.

His compositions (and those of his so-called 'followers') and his view on improvisation did not always receive the attention it deserved in the History of Jazz.
In the 50s, this group of musicians wrote, performed and recorded themes which today still surprise us, which still sound fresh and timeless.
t-unit5 let itself being challenged by this extraordinary music from Tristano, Konitz, Marsh and Tristano's view on improvisation.

Apart from Tom Van Dyck, you will get acquainted with young tenor player Matthias Van den Brande, part of the newest generation of Belgian sax players. Today he lives and works in Amsterdam, ending his education at the conservatory this year. He just got back from a 6-month stay in the US attending classes with a.o. Dick Oats.
The rhythm section features Ewout Pierreux on piano, Werner Lausher on double bass and Mimi Verderame on drums, three of Belgium’s top musicians who made name for themselves on international stages.
