Laurent Barbier starts the saxophone at the age of 10. After
several years of classical music lessons, he discovers jazz at 14 thanks to Olivier
Stalon and Fred Delplancq at the academy of Ciney. He takes then several summer
courses in jazz, including the Marlagne one which was particularly decisive in his
choice to become saxophonist. He begins studying at the Conservatory of Jazz in
Brussels in September 2008, enabling him to meet musicians such as Fabrice Alleman,
Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, or Steve Houben, who greatly influenced him in his artistic
direction. He wins in 2010 the first prize of Jazz Comblain-la-Tour competition with
"Evan Surya 4tet", which permits him to play at this festival which attends also big
names like Toots Thielemans, Lee Konitz and Aka Moon.
