FRENCH PIANIST MICHEL GRAILLER DIES ON FEB. 11, 2003
French pianist Michel GRAILLIER died on February 11 from an internal hemorragy. He has been for a long time associated with Chet BAKER (he appeared at the Ciney Jazz night last October in a tribute to Chet) and with the late Jacques PELZER. Funeral will take place at the Père Lachaise in Paris on Tuesday Feb. 18.
Our thoughts go to his wife, Micheline PELZER.

Toots THIELEMANS is on tour in Japan right now, playing the circuit of the Blue Note clubs in 4 different cities. He took with him the Belgian rhythm section composed of bassist Bart DE NOLF and drummer Bruno CASTELLUCCI, with Dutch pianist Mike DEL FERRO.

SAT 3 TV AIRED A TRIO CONCERT OF US PIANIST KIRK LIGHTSEY WITH BASSIST JEAN-LOUIS RASSINFOSSE
On Feb. 1st, 2003, the German satellite tv station Sat 3 has broadcasted under the title "Full House" a concert of US pianist Kirk LIGHTSEY, who a.o. played with the late Dexter GORDON. The trio was composed of Belgian bassist Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE, who recently played several tours with the pianist, and Douglas SIDES on drums.

Freddie has in the past played and recorded a.o. with Philip CATHERINE, Michel HERR and numerous American soloists.

FEB. 27, 2003 : BIG BAND 86 CONCERT : THE MUSIC OF PETER HERBOLZHEIMER
On February 27 (20:30), Big Band 86 led by Marc GODFROID (tb) will present a concert featuring the music of German composer/arranger Peter HERBOLZHEIMER and his “Rhythm Combination & Brass”. Herbolzheimer's band exists now for 30 years, gathers high level European (including Belgians like Marc GODFROID or drummer Bruno CASTELLUCCI) and US musicians. They had numerous famous guests : Nat Adderley, Philip Catherine, Ray Charles, John Faddis, Art Farmer, Ella Fitzgerald, Al Jarreau, Dizzy Gillespie etc.
Marc was able to collect many charts, a.o. an exciting version of "La Fiesta" by Chick Corea. The concert will take place in
De Eendracht, Geraardsbergen.

The Belgian Association of Jazz musicians, Les Lundis d'Hortense, has during the last weeks organized a series of "round tables" on various topics related to the jazz scene in Belgium : organizers, jazz places, agents, record labels, media, all in the presence of professionals. On Jan. 30, 2003, the topic of the day will be "the musicians", at the Botanique Café Théâtre in Brussels (starting at 14:00).

MICHEL HERR HONORED BY THE WDR BIG BAND
On February 22, 2003 The WDR Big Band plays the music of Michel HERR, conducted by the composer.
The "Jazz portrait of Michel HERR" concert will take place in Cologne (Germany), at the Stadtgarten. It will be a performance lasting one and a half hour, featuring exclusively compositions by Michel, recent ones as well as older ones which will be rewritten for the occasion.

This is not specifically a jazz news, but it concerns two Belgian jazz musicians. Bassist Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE (in this case a ... singing soldier !) and pianist Marc HÉROUET (in the role of ... a priest !). For three nights (Jan. 21, 22, 23, 2003), at the Brussels Tentation, they will revive "Le Reliquaire des Braves", an hilarious program of patriotic songs from the first WW period.
