The band Bender Banjax wins ‘Jong Jazztalent Gent 2008’
In the margin of its yearly festival, Gent Jazz Festival organizes, each year, together with Duvel-Moortgat and JazzLab Series a contest for young bands.
The uncontested winner of this year’s 8th edition, that took place in the framework of Jazz In ’t Park meets Gent Jazz Festival’ is the group Bender Banjax, line up : Erik Bogaerts (sax), Christian Mendoza (piano), Axel Gilain (base) et Stijn Cools (drums).
The winners are entitled to participate in the JazzLab Series 2008, a concert at Dinant Jazz Nights 2009, concert at Jazz Maastricht and Gent Jazz Festival 2009 as well as playing the closing of Jong Jazztalent Gent 2009. Photo Bruno-Bollaert

Marni Jazz - Le festival "Marni Jazz Rendez-Vous" celebrating 30 years of Travers in September
Théâtre Marni begins its 10th season this September with a series of concerts, in the framework of « Marni Jazz Rendez-Vous » that also reminds us the creation, 30 years ago, of the landmark Brussels club Travers.
There will be 7 concerts out of which 4 in reconstituted formations for the occasion.
This season the place will transform itself into a club, every first Tuesday of the month, for a concert given in the intimate atmosphere of the bar, for €5 entrance fee.

Aug. 1 : tribute to Albert Langue, trumpet player from Mons
The Maison du Jazz en Hainaut announce for August 1, 2008 (18:00) a tribute evening to the legendary trumpet player from Mons (B) Albert Langue, with the participation of the "Louisiana Dixie Band".
On this occasion, the Maison du Jazz en Hainaut will release a cd box containing all the recordings of "Albert Langue and the Dixies Stompers" between 1954 and 1994. Location : Machine à Eaux, Boulevard Dolez 51 in Mons.

JazzLab Series celebrating 15th anniversary
The JazzLab Series is celebrating its 15th anniversary and will be marking the occasion with a tour of an all stars band, featuring a number of musicians who frequently appeared in JazzLab series events. At Jazz in't Park (another festival celebrating its 15th year, clearly a popular anniversary with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra also celebrating 15 years of existence !), in the Zuidpark in Ghent, you will have the opportunity to witness a preview performance on 30th August at 10 pm. On stage: Bart Defoort (tenor sax), Frank Vaganée (alto sax), Nathalie Loriers (piano), Peter Hertmans (guitar), Nicolas Thys (bass) and Félix Simtaine (drums).

New album recorded by the Bart Defoort & Emanuele Cisi Quintet
Tenor saxophonist Bart Defoort will be releasing a cd in October with the Bart Defoort & Emanuele Cisi Quintet, the ensemble with whom he completed a successful Jazzlab tour a few months ago. This international quintet, with Cisi and Defoort on saxophones, Ron Van Rossum on piano, Nic Thys on bass and Sebastiaan De Krom on drums, will be promoting the cd later this year with a series of concerts beginning on 2nd October 2008 at the Bruges Jazz festival.

Django d'Or 2008 : awards distribution during the Ghent Jazz Festival on July 10
The jury has finished deliberating and the names been released for the nominated artists in the following 2 categories :
Django d'Or Jeune Talent 2008 (Young talent)
- Alexandre Cavaliere (violin)
- Quentin Liégeois (guitar)
- Robin Verheyen (saxophone)
Django d'Or musicien confirmé 2008 (confirmed musician)
- Bart Defoort (saxophone)
- David Linx (vocalist)
- Dré Pallemaerts (drummer)
The winners will be announced on July 10, 2008 during Gent Jazz Festival opening night.
The ceremony now alternates between two of Belgium major festivals, "Dinant Jazz Nights" and "Gent Jazz Festival".
New: as of this year's edition a cash prize of 10.000 Euros will be offered to the winner " Master of Jazz ". Also, Vzw Jeugd en Muziek Vlaanderen (Youth & Music organization in Flanders) is offering 2.000 Euro to the Django d'Or Young Talent 2008.
During the evening the winners of last year, pianist Pascal Mohy, and guitarist Pierre Van Dormael, will play, each, a concert followed by the ceremony. In the second part the festival programmed concerts by Lionel Loueke and Herbie Hancock.

The band Rackham will perform at 2 festivals in Colombia in September
The band RACKHAM (Toine Thys) has been invited to perform in major 2 festivals in Colombia in September 2008 : Teatro Libre in Bogota, and the Barranquijazz in Barranquilla, opening for Terence Blanchard.
On this occasion, they will partly play their new repertoire, which they will continue developing during a 4 days residence at the Jazz Station (Brussels) from Sept. 22 thru 25, 2008 (with a concert on the 25th).
