Born in Düsseldorf (Germany), Wolfgang ENGSTFELD starts playing the saxophone at the age of 14, studies music in Graz (Austria), as well as in his hometown. He gets several Prizes as a soloist in various festivals (Roermond, San Sebastian, etc) and receives the "Förderpreis" from the City of Düsseldorf.
In the seventies, he forms the quintet Jazztrack with trumpet player Uli BECKERHOFF. This group toured extensively and recorded four albums. By the way, the first pianist in the group was Belgian, nobody else but... Michel HERR.
He worked with CHANGES (2 LPs), ASSOCIATION P.C. (with Jasper VAN'T HOFF and Pierre COURBOIS), the Michael GIBBS Orchestra, as well as several names of the European and American scene : Chet BAKER, Charlie MARIANO, Albert MANGELSDORFF, John SCOFIELD, Manfred SCHOOF, Eje THELIN, Andrew WHITE, Eberhard WEBER, Charles TOLLIVER, Rainer BRUNINGHAUS, Wolfgang DAUNER, Daniel HUMAIR, Norma WINSTONE, Philip CATHERINE, Volker KRIEGEL, Jasper VAN'T HOFF, Edvard VESALA, Jon CHRISTENSEN, Ack VAN ROOYEN, the Klaus WEISS BIG BAND, etc.
He gets together again with pianist Michel HERR to found an international quartet which recorded 3 albums (with drummer Leroy LOWE and several bassists : Palle DANIELSSON, Isla ECKINGER, Riccardo DEL FRA, Hein VAN DE GEYN, Detlev BEIER, etc).
He played throughout the world, a.o. in German ensembles on tour for the Goethe Institut.
In Germany, he leads a trio "ENGSTFELD / PLÜMER / WEISS, which toured extensively, inviting guests such as trumpet players Terumasa HINO ('87) and Randy BRECKER ('89), and recording 3 albums. He a also led a quartet, and recorded with pianist Bob DEGEN, etc. Now the quartet is called "Wolfgand ENGSTFELD / Peter WEISS Quartet", with Hatmut KRACHT (b) and Achim KAUFFMAN (p). They recorded a CD.
Wolfgang ENGSTFELD played in the big bands of the German radios WRD, NDR and with the Klaus WEISS Big Band.
Known for his warm sound and his great lyrical feeling, he is currently one of his country's most respected saxophonists and composers. He taught in Hamburg, Aachen, Duisburg, and now teaches in Düsseldorf and at the Cologne Conservatory, where he has now the title of "Professor".
Wolfgang ENGSTFELD is a member of several groups led by Belgian pianist/composer Michel HERR and appears on his quintet CD Notes of Life (Igloo Igl 142).
