A combination you do not see every day : a singer who plays double bass. Henk DELAAT plucks his strings as he pulls his vocal-chords in the performance of his songs- Lyrically, full of emotion.
Not only does he conjure up a serene atmosphere, his performance will provoke shivers as well. A singer who immediately brings to mind the introvert and revealing voice of Chet Baker and the sonorous voice of Nat King Cole. His repertoire is twofold. While he plays beautiful jazz-ballads, also does a number of high-spirited brazilian pieces.
Henk Delaat studied with honors at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he graduated in 1988 from the department of improvised music. Subsequently he studied singing with Deborah Brown and Gé Titulaer. Later he improved his voice with Henry Chef d'Orge in Paris where he learned a natural way of singing.
He accompanied well-known artists such as Shirley Bassey, Deborah Brown, Marjory Barnes, Dee Daniels, Bob Mincer and Bob Malach. For two years he was part of the band of Denise Jannah with whom he played at the north Sea jazz-festival.
With trumpet player Eric Vloeimans he toured through Saudi-Arabia. In July '98 he played and sang with the Frits Bayens Big Band at the Montreal jazz festival before an audience of 15OOO enthusiastic people
Recently he played on a jazz cruise on the Mediterranean Sea.
As a globetrotter he learned about different music-styles in countries like Russia, China, Tibet, Pakistan, India, Brazil and the rest of South America.
At the moment he is working on different projects like a Brazilian project with accordion and guitar, a project with modern Django Reinhard music, a duo project with accordion player Ronny Verbiest, a project called Angelize, a cooperation between Angelilka Bastians from Germany with spirituaI jazz-songs they wrote together, a project with cross-over between jazz, Brazilian and pop music, and playing alone accompanying himself with guitar
December 1996 : the first album of Henk Delaat was released by Invitation' Records, entitled "But beautiful".
It contains a mixture of sensitive' ballads, such as the title track or "Born to be blue" and riveting Brazilian classics "O Pato", "Madalerna'". Henk Delaat is supported by renowned musicians like Bert van den Brink and Leonardo Amuedo and the string section of nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam. For this debut record Hernk received a warm recommendation of Toots Thielemans.
