After a 5 year classical education, he studied another 4 years at the Antwerp Jazz-Studio where his teacher was
John RUOCCO. Afterwards he went to the Brussels Conservatory (jazz-department) where Steve HOUBEN was his teacher.
Ben was active in different bands such as: Jan MUES septet, EMANON FIVE, Jos MOONS Big Band, Yellow City Big Band, B.R.T. Big Band, Brussels Jazz-Orchestra, "SAX NO END" of Jean WARLAND, ACT BIG BAND ....
He receives the Jack Van Poll award in 1992.
He wins the Antoon Van Dijck Award in 1999 in Antwerp.
He is or has been active in - OCTURN,
- the Myriam ALTER Quintet,
- Brussels Jazz-Orchestra,
- Paolo RADONI Quartet, Ten-Tamarre etc.....
He played national and international concerts such as:
- Jazz-Middelheim (Belgium),
- Knitting Factory (New York),
- Montreal Jazz-festival (Canada),
- North Sea festival (Holland)....
In 1995 he plays a few concerts with Philip CATHERINE.
He also played occasionally with Michel HERR, Joe LOVANO, Judy SILVERMAN, Bert JORIS, Chris JORIS ...
In 1997 he represented Belgium in the European Big-band in Slovenia.
Ben's main influences are: John RUOCCO, Charlie PARKER, Cannonball ADDERLEY, Peter KING, Hank MOBLEY, Lee KONITZ, Ornette COLEMAN, John COLTRANE, Steve GROSSMAN.......
Ben SLUIJS is the leader of the Ben SLUIJS Quartet, a very steady an tight band which exists for many years and recorded several albums. He also performs in duo with his regular pianist Erik VERMEULEN (CD).
Recently, Ben introduced a pianoless quartet, with Jeroen VAN HERZEELE (ts), Manolo CABRAS (b) and Marek PATRMAN (drs) (CD "True Nature, released in in 2005).
