Four Principles to Understand Music

In English. This book, published in the summer of 2008, is intended for improvising musicians, composers, music students and in general all people who want to understand how music
works. It covers many questions that you may ask yourself and that seem to have been forgotten over time like “where does the major
scale come from?” along with a traditional knowledge base, as well as innovating explanations and theories over the foundations of
today’s musical practices, including the changes that blues and jazz have yielded in music theory. Everyone will certainly find something
here that he/she does not know yet, but the main objective of this book is to replace the many “rules” (that are often given without
explanation why we should follow them) by four “principles” that once understood, will provide correct musical solutions
independently of a style, and a logical musical behavior granting you creative freedom. Their applications cover in depth how melody
operates over harmony, and the wealth of chord relationships (you may find some that you don’t use yet) and related scales and
tensions. You will also find an introduction to “Rhythmic Harmony”, a theoretical (and teachable) approach of how rhythm works based on
the analysis of African rhythms.

principes mélodiques propres au Blues et au Jazz avec leurs conséquences harmoniques, comment les développements mélodiques de Miles Davis, eux-mêmes ancrés dans la culture afro-américaine, nous mènent aux phrases "l'Harmonie Rythmique" sur base de l'analyse de rythmes traditionnels Africains.

Jazz In Little Belgium

In French. This unique and incredibly documented book, full of biographical data and rare illustrations, is a must for jazz lovers interested in the history of jazz in Belgium. Unfortunately, it is now about 20 years old and out of print, and unfortunately Robert PERNET, who died on Feb. 27, 2001, could not complete the update, except of the discographic part (see below).
En français. Cet ouvrage unique et incroyablement documenté, rempli de données biographiques et d'illustrations rares, est un must pour les amateurs de jazz intéressés par l'histoire du jazz en Belgique. Il a maintenant une vingtaine d'années et est épuisé, et malheureusement, Robert PERNET, décédé le 27/2/2001, n'a pu en terminer la mise à jour, sauf la partie discographie (énorme, voir plus bas).

Belgian Jazz Discography

In 1967 was published Robert PERNET (deceased in 2001) JAZZ IN LITTLE BELGIUM, a unique history & discography of Belgian Jazz.
After more than 30 years it is easy to imagine how many recordings by or including Belgian musicians have been made worldwide. It was about time to update this work. Many records have also been reissued either on LP
or CD. New sessions have been discovered and many details about obscure recordings have come to the light.
Extensive researches were made on such subjects as Belgian Ragtime on records, Piano Rolls, various "Dance Bands" that recorded in the Jazz idiom, better known as "Hot Dance", several non-Jazz ensembles devoting a part of their repertoire to that music and various recordings of all styles up to the Free Jazz and other
"improvised music" have been included as well.
A new version of this discography was published in November 1999 : BELGIAN JAZZ DISCOGRAPHY.
It contains almost twice and a half as much as in the original edition.
In fact it covers 100 years of recorded Belgian "syncopated music" (1897-1997) with a supplement at end of the book with the recent recordings made in 1998 and 1999.
The notes accompanying the discography are in English.

- Many pages including color illustrations (78's labels), plus various caricatures and reproductions of signatures of musicians among the pages of the discography.

Jos KNAEPEN, jazz lover and passionate photographer, also known as "the jazzman", has seen his photos published on several albums, books (a.o. "The Finest of Jazz in Belgium") and magazines such as Jazzmoza•ek (B), Down Beat (USA), Jazz Hot (F), Bass Magazine (NL), Stage Magazine (B), Jazz@round (B). In this selection of 150 black and white shots, he has recorded the expression of the moment.
Under the title JAZZ IN BELGIUM, he presents photos of known, and lesser known Belgian jazzmen caught at a unique moment. Carefully printed, the photos are introduced by a text written by jazz critic Luc De Baets.

Joe 'King' Oliver, via het ambassadeurswerk van Louis Armstrong en de glorierijke revival met Bunk Johnson en George Lewis tot de Britse tradjazz en tot wat vandaag in België en Nederland gebeurt.
JP De Smet legt het hele parcours van de authentieke jazz af. Daaruit groeit een boek van ontmoetingen met merkwaardige mensen (Bill Russell, 'Sweet' Emma Barrett, George Buck, Barry Martyn, Sammy Rimington, Pierre Clasessens, Rudy Balliu en tientallen anderen) en van beschrijvingen van markante plekken en momenten (Preservation Hall, het Jazz and Heritage Festival, Congo Square, het New Orleans Jazzmuseum, het jazzarchief van Tulane University...).

Le livre, né de la rencontre de l'auteur avec Louis M., raconte l'histoire de ce musicien, batteur de jazz, élève de Kenny Clarke, et accordéoniste "dissident et dissonant", dont le nom aurait dû figurer à l'affiche des hauts lieux du jazz en Europe. Mais Louis est ouvrier sidérurgiste dans le bassin lorrain puis devient, après la fermeture de l'usine, ouvrier d'entretien dans une école. Accordéoniste virtuose à douze ans, il découvre le swing à la Libération, avec l'arrivée des Américains. A 17 ans, il est volontaire en Corée. C'est là, au contact des Américains, qu'il découvre le jazz et décide, s'il en réchappe, de devenir batteur. A son retour, il devient l'élève de Kenny Clarke et pendant 6 ans, il fait la navette à moto entre une petite ville industrielle de la Lorraine belge où il habite et Paris pour y suivre ses cours. Malgré de nombreuses propositions, dont celle de Kenny Clarke lui-même, qui lui propose du travail à New York, il choisit (mais dans quelle mesure choisit-on ?) de vivre en marge, tant de sa région que du show-business. Il y a là un mystère et c'est ce mystère qui est à l'origine du livre. Sa musique, à l'accordéon comme à la batterie, truffée de dissonances, d'accidents harmoniques et rythmiques, n'est pas faite pour séduire et lui a valu bien des déboires dans la région qu'il n'a jamais voulu quitter. Mais elle l'a sauvé aussi puisqu'il n'hésite pas à dire : "Sans la musique, je serais aux travaux forcés". A travers le destin de Louis Mellyne, le roman nous fait revivre un demi-siècle d'histoire contemporaine : la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'après-guerre, la guerre de Corée, les années cinquante, les Golden Sixties, les fermetures d'usines. Le texte décline sous toutes ses coutures et sur un mode ludique une phrase que Kenny Clarke répétait à ses élèves et que Louis Mellyne n'a jamais oubliée: "La syncope est une maladie musicale qui sert à guérir la phrase". Au départ de cette phrase, le texte nous invite à une réflexion sur les origines et l'histoire du jazz et des musiques populaires d'aujourd'hui, mais aussi sur la nature de la création artistique et sur l'évolution de la culture du 20ème siècle au sens large.

Het zijn zo maar een paar pakkende beelden uit de 43 foto's die zijn verzameld in het eerste boek van amateur-fotograaf en jazzliefhebber Cees van de Ven : "Jazzportretten".
In zijn foto's tracht Van de Ven de intensiteit van emoties vast te leggen tijdens het spel: in improvisatie, interactie en rust. Uit de foto's moet vooral betrokkenheid spreken bij de persoon in focus. Door de keuze van het moment, de compositie en de kadering voorziet hij de foto's van een persoonlijke signatuur. Zelf zegt hij erover: "Als horen, kijken en zien samenvallen in het moment van de klik, is dat voor mij vaak een geslaagde jazzfoto."
