Mâäk's Spirit is a Belgian avantguardist jazz ensemble and the brainchild of Laurent Blondiau. Their music is strongly influenced by the experimental freedom we find in the music of Ornette Coleman. Jazz, Improvisation and the search for new musical colours are the group's main sources of inspiration. This eclectic ensemble unites an extraordinary selection of Belgian and French musicians with experienced personalities and an interesting musical history.
Their both liberating and enchanting music is mainly characterized by short themes and surprising rhythms that take unexpected turns, by formal freedom, and by the ample room for improvisation available to each of the group's members. This basis principle allows the collective to wonder off the beaten path as well as to attract other musicians.
Originally a quartet, the collective has grown into a group of up to eight artists. Their lineup differs for each project.
In 1998, as a quartet, Mâäk's Spirit released their first CD, Live.
The years that followed were centered around the search for a unique sound that also offered space for free interpretations. Singers, dancers and new instruments are introduced into the ensemble. Four-voice compositions, the dramatic quality of the lyrics and the collective improvisation further shape the ensemble's identity.
In 2001, six of its group's members went to the Moroccan town of Essaouira to perform with the traditional Gwnawa musicians, the group around Maâlem Mahmoed Guinéa. This exploration resulted in the recording of "le Nom du Vent" at CC de Meent Brussel. Le Nom du Vent has been the backbone of their tours since 2003. A remarkably varied acoustic wealth characterized by innovative song structures, creates the sound of this CD.
The group's musical experience has been enriched by the cooperation and concerts with the Malinesian artist Baba Sissoko and the ensemble "Gnawa Express" from Marocco. These collaborations culminated in their Live CD Al Majmad that was released under the Igloo label.
In 2004 their work focused on the collaboration with two South-African poets, a project hat produced a remarkable confrontation of raw sounds with spoken words.
Currently, Mâäk's Spirit is working on several daring large scale projects that further shape the group's identity, clearly positioning them in both the Flemish and the international music scene.
The musicians have their roots in the jazz scene, but the alternative scene is equally home to them: electro music, world music and improvisation… as becomes clear from the extensive list of other bands they are involved in: Aka Moon, John Cage, Misha Mengelberg, Greetings from Mercury, Rêve d'Eléphant Orchestra, Octurn, Kris Defoort's, Dreamtime, le Gros Cube, Michael Vatcher, Frédéric Rzweski, Barre Philips, Daniel Humair, David Friedman…
With copious enthusiasm and energy they engage in multidisciplinary projects, dance and theatre creations (Groupov, Bottelarij, Het Muziek Lod, Fatou Traoré, Gabriella Koutchoumova, Rosas en PARTS.
This openmindedness to every possible form of inspiration and rhythm make this collective a rich musical ensemble enchanting its audience in a playful and spontaneous way on every performance.
The diversity of their projects guarantee an optimal artistic deployment. Something which only enhances the pleasure they derive from playing their music. They take their audience on a fascinating and adventurous journey, something Mâäk's Spirit consider to be their key mission. They achieve this by setting up new projects that build on their vast experience. Aside from this, the ensemble also strives to gain new audiences with every project they undertake. These two characterizing aspects are summed up as renewal and consolidation.
