In the space between expectation and surprise, you will find De Beren Gieren.

Based on the compositions of Fulco Ottervanger, the young trio seeks for music and for each other. This is the key to their music; the challenge of using the power of improvisation on the quest for a new form.

During his studies at the Conservatory of Ghent Fulco Ottervanger (pn) had the chance to meet Lieven Van Pee (bs) en Simon Segers (dr). From the first moment it became evident that this was the right choice for a rhythmic section to paint on canvas the colours he had in mind. And so we come to the beginning of the story.

Since they came together in 2009 they had the chance to share their music at festivals such as Gent Jazz, Jazz Middelburg and Jazz in 't Park. A year later they did a Belgian JazzLab tour.

In September 2010 De Beren Gieren recorded their first EP. The future of this band starts slowly to unfold and takes form step by step into the international circuit.

A number of new projects have shown the support of the jazz scene. In the beginning of 2011, De Beren Gieren engaged on a tour with the renowned French DJ Boulaone, organized by Jazz Lab series. This summer, together with the Vooruit Art Center, they travelled to Bologna. The city of Gent has received the title 'Unesco Creative City of Music' and chose De Beren Gieren among others as its ambassadors.

They also played in collaboration with the guitarist Jaak Sooäär at the 4th IMC World Forum on Music which took place in Tallin, Estonia. The end of this year will bring a series of concerts and live recordings with the German saxophonist Jan Klare and the France-based guitarists Jean-Yves Evrard and Hasse Poulsen.

In February 2012 they will release their debut album at the Vooruit. What might come in the future of these young talents it is only to be seen.
