This is the music of the opera The Woman Who Walked into Doors.
The Woman Who Walked into Doors was given its world premiere in November 2001.
This is the first composition for orchestra and voice by Kris Defoort. The Prometheus Orchestra and Defoort’s jazz group Dreamtime share the instrumental part; the protagonist’s entourage is represented by video images and the projection of texts, while the role of the protagonist herself is held by both a singer (the soprano Claron McFadden) and an actress (Jacqueline Blom).
The Woman Who Walked into Doors tells the gripping story of Paula Spencer, a housewife whose life is ruled by alcohol and physical violence. The book is written by Roddy Doyle, an Irish writer known in particular for his novels The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van (all three adapted for the cinema). The libretto is the result of his collaboration with the stage director Guy Cassiers and dramaturgist Marianne Van Kerkhoven.
